Education
We
believe part of the job of a good doctor is to
teach people about the nature of their problem.
Pain, fatigue, and the limitations they cause
can be frustrating and confusing. One of our goals
is to first identify the cause of your pain or
other health problem, explain your treatment options,
and help you to set recovery goals.

Hands-on Treatment
There are a number of manual techniques we use
to ease your symptoms and speed your recovery.
We have developed expertise in many different
types of techniques so that we may better match
the treatment to meet your specific needs: The
combination of these approaches allows us to customize
treatment plans for superior results.
Adjustment
/ Manipulation — this
is the technique most associated with chiropractic
treatment. The goal of the procedure is to remove
painful movement restriction quickly and safely.
During these procedures you are positioned comfortably
and the doctor will then carefully apply a specific
and gentle maneuver to the affected spinal area.
Cox
Flexion Distraction Manipulation
— we use a special type of treatment table
to apply gentle and specific traction to the
spinal vertebrae. This treatment option is especially
helpful to mobilize stiff spinal areas when
other techniques are not possible. We use Flexion
Distraction Manipulation to ease pressure on
irritated spinal nerves in patients with herniated
disc problems, stenosis, and other spine problems
causing nerve pain. For more information, see
www.coxtechnique.com.
Joint
Mobilization — certain
body regions respond very well to mobilization.
This involves placing a joint or body region
through a series of gradual movements in order
to improve range of motion. Joint mobilization
is frequently used in patients with shoulder,
hip and knee problems. For additional information,
see
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Joint_mobilization.
Graston
Technique® - Myofascial (my-o-fash-ul)
Release
— painful restrictions in the muscles
and connective tissues of the body are a major
source of irritation and limitation during common
activities and in sports. Combining chiropractic
with muscle system treatment, in our clinical
experience, provides superior results. We frequently
use a wide range of myofascial techniques. Graston
Technique® provides significant benefit
for conditions such as plantar fascitis (foot
pain), achilles and patellar (knee) tendonosis
– a problem that’s seen frequently
in runners, carpal tunnel syndrome (wrist and
hand), tennis elbow, hip pain, rotator cuff,
and low back pain and headache. For more information
see www.grastontechnique.com
NeuroMuscular
Techniques — while
some muscles may become overly tight and painful,
others may be weak and unable to hold your body
in its proper alignment. We use functional movement
testing to identify imbalances. We then apply
NeuroMuscular techniques to activate weak muscles
and to improve muscle balance throughout the
body.

Therapeutic Exercise
Recent
studies have clearly identified the benefit of
combining chiropractic treatment with exercise.
As you recover, special rehabilitative exercises
will be provided to help to improve flexibility,
body alignment and posture, stability and strength.
Programs commonly include sensorimotor improvement
(balance/coordination), stretching of short or
tight muscles, and strengthening core stabilizing
muscles. These programs are completed both at
the office and at home and will help limit the
number of necessary appointments and lower out-of-pocket
costs to you. It has long been our practice philosophy
to help you to maintain your health and activity
level through simple, scientifically based and
effective exercises.
MedX
Therapy – sometimes
more aggressive rehabilitative work is required
for spines that have long-standing or serious
deconditioning or instability. MedX therapy
is a medical rehabilitation device for neck
and back pain sufferers that allows the doctors
to specifically isolate the troubled area and
rehabilitate it in a safe and controlled manner.
Patients that suffer from chronic recurring
problems, or that have failed back surgery syndrome
are usually good candidates fro this procedure.
It is especially needed after Whiplash Injuries
of the neck. For more information, see http://www.medxonline.com/.

Acupuncture
Dr.
Kathleen is a licensed South Dakota acupuncturist
with 25 years of experience. The term
acupuncture describes a family of procedures involving
stimulation of anatomical points on the body by
a variety of techniques. The acupuncture technique
that has been most studied scientifically involves
penetrating the skin with thin acupuncture wires
inserted at various acupoints that have been used
for 5000 years by China, Japan and other Asian
countries. Auricular therapy(ear acupuncture)
is often used with electrical stimulation.
According to the National Institutes of Health
Consensus Statement on Acupuncture, there have
been many studies on acupuncture's efficacy --
for example, in adult postoperative patients,
nausea and vomiting patients and in postoperative
dental pain. We’ve had results with many
other conditions -- such as addictions, including
smoking cessation, headaches, menstrual cramps,
menopausal symptoms, infertility, myofascial pain,
osteoarthritis, low-back pain, sciatica, carpal
tunnel syndrome, tennis elbow and shingles and
weight loss--in which acupuncture may be useful
as an adjunct treatment or be included in a comprehensive
management program. |

Functional Medicine
Functional
Medicine is a form of natural healthcare dealing
with the assessment, treatment and prevention
of complex, chronic disease. Virtually every complex,
chronic disease is preceded by long-term disturbances
in function that need to be identified and effectively
managed. Patients that are looking for a natural,
non-drug approach to the management of chronic
conditions go through careful history-taking,
physical examination, and laboratory testing,
if needed. Assessments are made for a variety
of imbalances, including: • Hormonal
imbalances • Immune dysfunctions (may
include sinus inffection and chronic fatigue)
• Inflammatory diseases (may
include cardiovascular, joint inflammation)
• Digestive, absorptive and microbiological
imbalances • Structural imbalances
at the cellular and whole body levels
• Nutritional and dietary deficiencies (may
include osteopporosis, skin problems)
Once an assessment has been made, treatment
options are discussed. Changing how the system(s)
function(s) can have a major impact on a patient’s
health.
Lifestyle is a very big factor; research estimates
that 70-90% of the risk of chronic disease is
attributable to lifestyle. That means what you
eat, how you exercise, what your spiritual practices
are, how much stress you live with (and how
you handle it) are all elements that must be
addressed in a comprehensive approach. So you,
the patient, become an active partner with your
functional medicine practitioner. You may be
asked to make dietary and activity changes that,
when combined with nutrients targeted to specific
functional needs, will allow you to really be
in charge of improving your own health and changing
the outcome of disease.
The good news
is: when you look at functionality, you uncover
many different ways of attacking problems
— you are not limited to the “drug
of choice for condition X.”
