What is chiropractic?

Chiropractic - [ki"ro-prak'tik] means "done by hand". Chiropractors blend the drugless, non-surgical art of hands-on therapy with the science and technology of modern medicine and physical rehabilitation. It is a branch of health care that concentrates on naturally balancing and optimizing the function of the body in order to promote and maintain health. At the foundation of chiropractic philosophy is that the body has the ability to heal itself, provided the organ systems function optimally. The primary treatment administered by chiropractors is spinal manipulation, also known as an adjustment. Many chiropractors (ourselves included) prescribe exercises, stretches and lifestyle modifications to maintain optimal health. Some, like us, also provide acupuncture, nutrition and functional medicine counseling.

How is your office differentIf you’ve been to other chiropractors before, you’ve noticed there is a lot of variety in our profession. In our office, you will be given honest treatment recommendations based on scientific studies and current concepts of health and healing. While some doctors focus only on pain, we go beyond. We seek to find the root cause. While some doctors do a very brief examination and treat you for what they "think" is wrong, we pride ourselves on being thorough. We’ll treat you as family. We’ll spend time actively listening to you, getting to know you, and performing a complete and thorough examination. We’ll provide you an explanation what is actually wrong with you and how we can help; not only to get you out of pain, but to help you achieve optimal health.

Once I go to a chiropractor will I ALWAYS have to go?

Once I go to a chiropractor willNot if you come to our office! Our goal is not to create patient dependence, but to teach our patients tools that can result in resolution and stability of their problems. Let’s be realistic, if you continue to do what you did to get yourself in trouble in the first place – it is only a matter of time, before you will be in trouble again. That being said, at Deutsch Chiropractic our goal is to relieve your pain as quickly as possible with the fewest number of appointments, and to get well and stay well.

Dr. Fred and Dr. Kathleen are proponents of patient empowerment. We teach our patients how to keep their spines in good shape, much like dentists educate their patients about oral hygiene through regular brushing and flossing.

We teach stretching and strengthening exercises and give advice on how to sit, stand, and perform normal daily activities properly so you maintain improvements gained from chiropractic treatments. Several medical journals have published studies showing that patients with back pain benefit from spinal manipulation combined from exercises, but those patients who continued to do the prescribed exercises were far more likely to maintain their improvement after treatment was discontinued. Patients who are faithful to a home program of exercise and body awareness have significantly better results from treatment.
