| What
is chiropractic? Chiropractic
- [ki"ro-prak'tik] means "done by
hand". Chiropractors blend the drugless,
non-surgical art of hands-on therapy with the
science and technology of modern medicine and
physical rehabilitation. It is a branch of health
care that concentrates on naturally balancing
and optimizing the function of the body in order
to promote and maintain health. At the foundation
of chiropractic philosophy is that the body
has the ability to heal itself, provided the
organ systems function optimally. The primary
treatment administered by chiropractors is spinal
manipulation, also known as an adjustment. Many
chiropractors (ourselves included) prescribe
exercises, stretches and lifestyle modifications
to maintain optimal health. Some, like us, also
provide acupuncture, nutrition and functional
medicine counseling.

How
long will each visit take?
The
first visit lasts for about an hour. Typical follow-up
visits are usually 15 minutes each. In addition,
patients may spend 10-15 minutes performing exercise,
so from the time you enter to the time you leave,
the time should rarely
exceed 30 minutes. On each visit you’ll
be greeted by name by our warm, friendly receptionist.
We’ll do our best to get you back to a treatment
room as soon as you walk in the office. We value
your time!

How is your office different
than other chiropractor offices?
If
you’ve been to other chiropractors before,
you’ve noticed there is a lot of variety
in our profession. In our office, you will be
given honest treatment recommendations based on
scientific studies and current concepts of health
and healing. While some doctors focus only on
pain, we go beyond. We seek to find the root cause.
While some doctors do a very brief examination
and treat you for what they "think"
is wrong, we pride ourselves on being thorough.
We’ll treat you as family. We’ll spend
time actively listening to you, getting to know
you, and performing a complete and thorough examination.
We’ll provide you an explanation what is
actually wrong with you and how we can help; not
only to get you out of pain, but to
help you achieve optimal health.

How will I feel after I am adjusted?
When
a condition is recent and uncomplicated, patients
often experience progressive relief
after every adjustment. If inflammation is present,
it is normal to feel “little or no”
change in symptoms for several visits until the
inflammation diminishes. At our office, most patients
receive significant relief in the first two weeks.

|
Will it hurt to be adjusted
by Dr. Fred or Dr. Kathleen?
Our
techniques are extremely gentle and specific.
Because, they each spend time relaxing the muscles
or use physical therapies to relax them, the joints
are mobilized with minimum effort. Patients often
describe the treatment as a very comfortable and
relaxing experience.

Once I go to a chiropractor will I ALWAYS have
to go?
Not
if you come to our office! Our
goal is not to create patient dependence, but
to teach our patients tools that can result in
resolution and stability of their problems.
Let’s be realistic, if you continue to do
what you did to get yourself in trouble in the
first place – it is only a matter of time,
before you will be in trouble again. That being
said, at Deutsch Chiropractic our goal is to relieve
your pain as quickly as possible with the fewest
number of appointments, and to get well and stay
well.
Dr. Fred and Dr. Kathleen
are proponents of patient empowerment.
We teach our patients how to keep their spines
in good shape, much like dentists educate their
patients about oral hygiene through regular brushing
and flossing.
We teach stretching
and strengthening exercises and give advice
on how to sit, stand, and perform normal daily
activities properly so you maintain improvements
gained from chiropractic treatments. Several medical
journals have published studies showing that patients
with back pain benefit from spinal manipulation
combined from exercises, but those patients who
continued to do the prescribed exercises were
far more likely to maintain their improvement
after treatment was discontinued. Patients who
are faithful to a home program of exercise and
body awareness have significantly better results
from treatment.

How long is required for me to recover from my
problem?
Your
treatment plan is based on what’s needed
to recover from your condition, and
many health and lifestyle factors affect the duration
of recovery. The most common are compliance with
the treatment schedule, compliance with home instructions,
including exercise, the severity of the condition,
how long the condition has been present, job duties,
lifestyle, age, pre-existing conditions, delayed
treatment, and previous episodes or injury. Simple
cases may take days to treat. Complicated cases
may take weeks, even months. You are given only
the treatment you need.

Does my insurance plan cover chiropractic?
Nearly
all insurance plans today include chiropractic
benefits to one extent or another.
The best way to know for sure is to call your
insurance company or give us your insurance information
so that we can call directly and verify coverage.
We participate in most local plans. If you are
injured on the job or in a car accident, chances
are that care will be covered 100%.

Is chiropractic safe during pregnancy?
For
some 25 year, Dr. Kathleen
has enjoyed treating hundreds of women throughout
all nine months of pregnancy. Her
gentle touch and special treatment techniques
have given her the opportunity to share in this
special time and give tremendous relief to so
many. Pregnancy is one of the most important times
to make sure your body is functioning optimally
with regular chiropractic care.
Also, postpartum back
pain is relieved by Chiropractic adjustments. And
Dr. Kathleen loves to treat newborns! Often the
“fussy baby” has a physical reason
to be uncomfortable. New babies can have subluxations
or misalignment from the lay in the womb, or the
delivery itself. These may cause increased tension
in the neck and spine and can affect nerve flow
to internal organs such as the stomach. Also,
gassy tummies can be caused from altered colon
floura due to antibiotics during pregnancy or
delivery. Babies turn around quickly with gentle
adjusting and acupressure points to correct imbalances.
Dr. Kathleen also does
acupuncture for infertility problems.

Is chiropractic safe for children?
Heavy
book bags, de-conditioned young bodies from too
much TV and computer work and ever increasing
“pressure” to achieve has led to a
barrage of complaints in children today.
Dr Kathleen’s treatment is focused on prevention,
posture, conditioning and relaxation techniques
- it is ideal for young bodies that are pre-maturely
“mal-functioning”.
Chiropractic is safe for children and
should be included as part of their “wellness
program” with routine 6 month
check-ups to check function of their joints, imbalances
in posture or to enhance their immune system during
the cold and flu season. We treat allergies and
stomach complaints frequently as well. Many structural
abnormalities can be caught early and changes
made through adjusting. Children respond
incredibly quickly to her unique treatment approach.
Dr. Kathleen has extensive clinical experience
treating children and she loves doing it –
that in combination with our warm environment
and “lots of things to play with”
makes coming to our office something children
look forward to!

What conditions is acupuncture used for?
Back
pain, any joint pain, infertility, headaches,
menopausal symptoms, and sciatica to name a
few -- but Dr. Kathleen
says her favorite thing to do is help people
quit smoking with acupuncture.

What’s involved
with a functional medicine consultations?
If
you’re seeking natural or nutritional
solutions to your health problems, you’ll
be given a Medical Symptoms Questionnaire to
complete that will help Dr. Kathleen advise
you on the best course of action.
Patients who take advantage of this are people
with chronic fatigue,
digestive problems,
abnormal bowel patterns,
inflammation problems,
allergies,
fibromyalgia,
autoimmune problems,
metabolic syndrome,cardiovascular
changes including high lipid levels.
A consultation takes from 20-60 minutes depending
on the chronicity, severity and how many inter-related
problems are involved. The number of follow-up
visits also depends on these conditions. Sometimes
it’s like peeling an onion one layer at
a time. But the patients
who come in with significant and long-standing
health problems can typically obtain significant
benefit within 6-8 weeks.
